Cortney Filler of Havre has registered for the first-ever Bear Paw Marathon, set to take place next June in north-central Montana’s Bear Paw Mountains.
Her official, in-person signup in the Havre Area Chamber of Commerce office — one of the attendees said her boss signed up even earlier Tuesday morning and beat her to the first position — was celebrated by everyone in attendance, including the new executive director of the Chamber, Julea Robbins.
The marathon was inspired and spearheaded by Havreite Rachel Dean, who works at Montana State University-Northern.
“I’m super excited,” Dean said, a wide grin not betraying her. “It’s a dream come true. This is great for Havre.”
Despite her role in the upcoming 2020 Bear Paw Marathon and her history of having run in marathons, Dean won’t be joining the throng. She’ll be too busy working behind the scenes, directing, she said.
Filler, however, has never run a marathon. But that’s not going to deter her from running the full 26.2 miles.
Filler and her husband, Tony Filler, lead a very active lifestyle. Among some of their shared activities are paddleboarding, snowshoeing and kiteboarding. Sometimes, they’ve been known to do it naked.
Filler is also running the marathon in commemoration of her late grandmother-in-law, who recently passed, Mavis Filler Farnham.
“I’m going to do this for Mavis,” Filler said.
People interested in signing up can go online and do so. The marathon also has a Facebook page. The marathon begins at 6 a.m. on Saturday, June 6, 2020, while the half-marathon begins an hour later, followed by one-milers for adults and youth at 9 a.m.
